Ian Colban

April 2018

I have now been the Regional Representative for ARLA Property in Sussex for just over 5 years and, like many of you have seen the shape of the industry change significantly over that period with no reason to believe that this is going to change any time soon.

Housing is a hot topic, everyone has an opinion and everyone wants to add their voice to the discussion whether that be to apportion blame, criticize the lawmakers or put forward possible solutions.  The truth is that if we are to get the supply of housing right it will depend on a multi- faceted approach and the Private Rented sector, despite the battering it appears to have taken over the last few years has a major part to play in that.

Institutional Investors can be persuaded into the market in area where economies of scale make it commercially viable for them and proper provision can be made for adequate social housing so that vulnerable and disadvantaged tenants are not forced to compete in the private rental market. That said, the Private Landlord will always have a significant role to play in providing quality housing for a population who find it either increasing hard to buy, or who, through choice prefer the flexibility of rented accommodation.

What is increasingly clear in an age where tenant’s expectations rightly continue to rise, is that we as ARLA Propertymark members have to continue to promote the highest standards of service, professionalism and compliance.

I have been very proud to be associated with the work that ARLA Propertymark have done over the last 5 years in continuously striving to improve industry standards and I have no doubt that these standards will continue to rise over the next few years as legislation on the likes of compulsory Client Money Protection, electrical safety and hopefully industry regulation come into force.

As members we have a role to play in promoting the ARLA Propertymark brand at every opportunity to both Landlords and tenants alike as the symbol of trust, professionalism and service. We can do this by keeping ourselves fully informed on the changes in legislation, market trends, industry innovation and best practices. The best way to do this is to attend your regular Regional meetings where you will hear talks from key industry players such as the ARLA Propertymark team and top industry legal speakers.

See you at the next one!
