ARLA, the Association of Residential Letting
Agents and the lead professional body for the rental market, has
welcomed the announcement today (Wednesday 12 December) of an
independent review of the Private Rented Sector.
However, the Association has called for particular
attention to be paid to the issues of licensing for all agents and
independent redress for the consumer. It would also welcome letting
agents being covered under the latest edition of the Money
Laundering Regulations. So far, these only cover estate agents.
The announcement by Housing Minister Yvette Cooper
states that the Review will look at more and better options for the
Sector
ARLA has called on successive governments to make
licensing compulsory for all letting agents and to introduce
compulsory independent redress.
Said Ian Potter, Head of Operations for the
Association, “While the professional bodies can ensure that their
own member agents are compliant with best practice, safeguard their
clients’ money and abide by a disciplinary code, too many letting
agents operate without any experience or any system designed to
protect either themselves and the public.”
