Are you ready for Register your Appliance Day 2019?

On 24 January 2019, the public will be reminded that it has never been easier to protect themselves and their homes by registering the millions of large white goods that they rely on every day.

As well as new bargains bagged in the sales, they will be urged to look around their kitchens to register older products manufacturers still don’t know they have. You can help get the message out to tenants and landlords by joining in the campaign and downloading the online resources to send out, email, or display in your offices. 

Many of the UK’s leading domestic appliance manufacturers, driving AMDEA’s Register My Appliance safety campaign, are rewarding those customers who make the wise choice to register their fridges, freezers or washing machines by entering them into free prize draws for a range of luxury prizes. Every appliance they register, including those they may have been using for many years, increases their chances of winning a prize.

Register my Appliance Day 2019 will be supported by the recently formed government Office for Product Safety & Standards, Propertymark, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, along with a range of consumer groups, social housing landlords and the local fire and rescue services nationwide.  All concerned believe that registration of both new and older appliances is critical to enable manufacturers to act swiftly in case of a recall, or if a free safety repair becomes necessary.

With registrations growing month on month, well over half of visitors to www.registermyappliance.org.uk now arrive via their handheld device. Increasing numbers are also using the mobile-optimised version of the site, which was launched to encourage more people to take the smart path to making their homes safer in seconds.

On the 24 January customers who are signed up with their favourite brands of domestic appliances, will receive a letter prompting them to reach for their smartphones and register any of the 60-plus brands featured, most of which accept registrations of products up to at least 12 years old.

Even for those that are aware of the government backed Register My Appliance portal, there are a number of reasons why appliances get missed or additional appliances end up in rental properties, which could result in landlords and tenants not being kept in the loop about product recalls and safety notices:

• The property might be let unfurnished
• In furnished properties tenants often like to add their own additional appliances
• Sometimes landlords might add appliances mid-way through a tenancy after you’ve done an inventory, or 
• A previous tenant might leave behind unwanted appliances.

By reminding your landlords and tenants (on handover) to register their appliances, you can help ensure tenants’ safety.

A previous YouGov Survey in association with Association of Manufactures of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) found that almost a third (29%) of households found a fridge in situ when they moved in to their current property, and, although they continue using it, the great majority (80%) have no idea if it’s registered. Very few people (15%) realise they can register an appliance with the manufacturer, even if they acquired it second hand or inherited it. These appliances are effectively strangers, and neither your tenant, your landlord or the manufacturer know very much about it. 

Some simple instructions to give your tenants and landlords

All that is needed is the product’s serial number, found on the appliance data plate (on the door frame of ovens, on the door of washing machines and inside the fridge compartment).
