Think tank call for Right to Buy to be extended to the private sector

Think Tank Civitas has called for the standard length of a tenancy in the private rented sector to be set at five years with tenants being given the option of buying the property (if it is more than 25 years old) at a discount after three years within the property.

Updated resources on Universal Credit now available

ARLA has updated its fact sheet for members about Universal Credit and private rented housing. Universal Credit is being introduced in stages across England, Wales and Scotland. Currently there is no confirmed date for the rollout of Universal Credit in Northern Ireland. It is managed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

New offences around Right to Rent

New landlord and agent offences designed to work in combination with those created by the Housing & Planning Act look likely to be in place by the end of the year. Immigration Minister James Brokenshire MP chairs a Landlord implementation panel for Immigration Act 2014 and Immigration Act 2016 alongside crossbench peer Lord Best. At a recent meeting the Minister gave more detail on the proposed implementation of offences for landlords and agents who disregard Right to Rent checks.
