Client Accounting for Residential Lettings

This course will help delegates understand how to deal with client money and assist in ensuring compliance with the accounting procedures of the professional bodies. It will also provide practical guidance on non-resident landlords and the Finance Act 1995.

The session will explain the basics of client accounting, areas of potential risk and Capital Gains Tax for individuals. Attendees will also develop their understanding of dealing with rent, including demands, client accounting, arrears and cash book management.

Ian Potter, ARLA Trainer

Ian Potter

Ian worked in residential letting agencies for almost 20 years and was involved with many non-resident landlords as well as discussion with the Revenue when the current non-Resident Landlords Scheme was being set up. He moved to work with ARLA, meeting many government departments and politicians on the subject of the PRS in all legal jurisdictions including the introduction of Tenancy Deposit Protection.

Having retired in 2014 Ian currently works as a consultant for several companies related to the PRS including NFoPP Awarding Body, TDS and Safe Deposits where he was recently appointed chairman of the Board of Directors. He also does work on compliance health checking for both letting and estate agents. Ian has wide knowledge and understanding on the issues surrounding client accounting itself, experiencing many different software systems and processes..
