Agents in Scotland given 100% rates relief during crisis

Monday 30 March 2020

Letting and estate agents, along with a host of other businesses, will be exempt from rates relief from 2020-21 as part of the Scottish Government’s £2.2 billion plan to support businesses through the Coronavirus outbreak.

Under the new Non-Domestic Rates (Coronavirus Reliefs) (Scotland) Regulations 2020 introduced to the Scottish Parliament, it confirms 100 per cent rates relief for the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.

The Scottish Government is working with local authorities to make sure this relief is implemented as soon as possible.

While our primary concern is for people’s health, it is clear that the COVID-19 outbreak is significantly impacting Scotland’s economy – particularly businesses in the hospitality, retail, tourism, aviation, and leisure industries.

The Scottish Government is determined to take decisive action to support businesses through this crisis, and these rates reliefs will provide an important source of financial support for companies in these sectors and their staff during this difficult time.

Ben Macpherson, Minister for Public Finance

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic Propertymark has been working tirelessly with all Governments across the UK to ensure support, resources, and guidance for the sector. We ensured that the UK Government extended the business rates relief to letting and estate agent offices in England and we are pleased that the Scottish Government has done the same.
