Scottish Government consults on short-term lets

The Scottish Government is asking for views on the regulation of short-term lets in Scotland on the back of the significant growth.

Why are they consulting?

Short-term lets have become the subject of much controversy in some parts of Scotland which evoke strong opinions and with the Government’s commitment to ensure that local authorities have appropriate regulatory powers, stated in their 2018 Programme for Government, this consultation asks for views in order to set out what those powers should be.

Welcomed views

The Scottish Government welcomes views on:

  • The economic benefits which the development of new models of short-term letting brings to Scotland
  • The problems caused by short-term lets
  • The approach, which might involve registration and/or licensing of short-term lets and enable different areas to tailor the approach to their local needs and priorities
  • The possible addition of a market-based mechanism to control numbers.

The views gathered on these issues will help the Scottish Government shape the regulatory approach to short-term lets.

Nicola Sturgeon, Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) commented on the proposed changes at the SNP conference in Edinburgh, saying: “For many people, accommodation provider Airbnb has enabled cheaper, more flexible travel. It’s one of the reasons Scotland’s tourism industry is booming.

“But for others – particularly in tourist hot spots, like the centre of this city – it is making it harder to find homes to live in. So today, we are setting out new plans to help cities like Edinburgh and islands like Arran, get the balance right.

“We are asking for views on a new system of regulation to make short term lets subject to the same controls as any other accommodation.

“We want to give councils the power to control the number of lets and ensure they make a contribution to the services they use.”
