Changes to Holding Deposit Laws follows Propertymark meeting with Welsh Minister

Government grant to tackle rogue landlords

Funding has been made available to local authorities in order to effectively target rogue landlords, support good landlords in fulfilling their responsibilities and empower tenants.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is offering £3.8 million funding which local authorities can apply for by outlining their project proposals.

The Government wants the funding to further encourage new or targeted short-term initiatives in the Private Rented Sector (PRS), enabling most landlords, who are good, to continue to provide safe and decent homes for their tenants.

This is the second year the Government has offered this funding. Last year over £2 million was shared amongst 56 projects reaching 100 councils and combined are home to over a million households living in the PRS.

The Government’s aim for the funding

The Government hopes to raise the standard of properties in the PRS by supporting projects that will help local authorities to carry out their duties and use their existing budgets more effectively; and to develop or enhance existing PRS enforcement activities.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “It’s unacceptable that a small minority of unscrupulous landlords appear to be breaking the law and providing homes which fall short of the standards that tenants rightly expect.

“Everyone deserves to live in a home that is safe and secure, and the funding announced today will help to further strengthen councils’ powers to crack down on criminal landlords and drive up standards in the private rented sector.”
