Scottish Letting & Property Management - Part A

This course would suit those with little or no experience of the letting industry, but will also benefit those who have been in practice for some time. It will give a basic understanding of the legal concepts which underlie the letting of property.

The course will focus on the most important legal requirements that an agency needs to comply with in order to help their landlord and the agency avoid breaching their legal duties and possibly committing criminal offences. The course will consider the fundamental rights and obligations of both landlords and tenants and also introduce some of the new and proposed legislation which will have an effect on landlords and letting agents.


  • General legal concepts and how they apply to property
  • Discrimination law
  • An introduction to agency law, including the agency contract, authority to act, power to bind the landlord, and dealing with client money.
  • The different types of  tenancies that exist and how they are created
  • Outline of the legal  obligations and rights of landlords, before, during and after the tenancy including; the tenants information pack, tenancy deposits, repairs, safety, and access
  • Tenants fundamental rights and responsibilities
  • Outline of ending different types of tenancies
  • Outline of any new and proposed legislative provision affecting landlords and agents

Alison Hattrick

Alison Hatrick

A qualified surveyor, with 25 years estate agency experience and a Fellow of NAEA for 20 years. Alison has held various roles including; Chairman of Scottish branch and the Scottish Home Affairs Committee.

Alison currently owns an estate agency and leasing agency on the West coast of Scotland and offers consultancy as well as training on a variety of subjects including our ARLA Scottish Letting and Property Management courses.

Corinne Peddie

Corinne Peddie

Corinne has a degree in Law and has worked for over 30 years in tertiary education, initially as a University Law Lecturer and then as a distance learning tutor, with particular emphasis in more recent times supporting online learning for students in real estate.  She provides advice on the syllabus and study materials for the legal units for the residential lettings technical award and co-wrote and presents the Scottish Letting and Property Management courses with colleague Alison Hatrick.
